With grocery prices continuing to climb and many families losing access to supplemental nutrition programs, more western Douglas County residents are turning to community food assistance for help this holiday season. To meet that growing need, the West O Chamber of Commerce and the Christian Outreach Program Elkhorn (COPE) are once again partnering to provide the annual Holiday Food Basket — a 45-year community tradition that brings complete holiday meals to families in need.
This December, the program will deliver food baskets to more than 500 households across Elkhorn, Bennington, Valley, Waterloo, and Yutan. Each basket includes pantry staples donated by area schools, along with purchased items such as toilet paper, fresh fruit, and a full holiday dinner featuring ham or chicken breasts, potatoes, dressing, and gravy.
“We’ve seen a noticeable increase in the number of families seeking help this year,” said Nancy Lary, Executive Director of COPE. “Grocery prices have remained high, and some families have lost access to supplemental nutrition benefits that previously helped them stay afloat. This program helps fill that gap and makes sure those affected in our community can share a holiday meal.”
Monetary donations are essential to the program’s success. While much of the food is donated, funds are needed to purchase fresh and perishable items that make each basket a complete holiday meal. Every dollar donated goes directly toward these food purchases, ensuring that help reaches local families immediately.
“The best part of this program is knowing that your gift goes straight to your neighbors,” said Jim Tomanek, Chair of the Holiday Food Basket Committee. “When you give, you’re putting food on tables right here in our own community, at a time they need it the most.”
Donations can also be mailed to COPE at PO Box 177, Elkhorn NE 68022-0177, with “Holiday Food Basket” noted on the memo line.
Volunteers are also needed to help pack and deliver baskets on December 19–20. For more information or to get involved, contact COPE at 402-616-2330 or email us at help@copeinfo.org.
